Electrofishing

We got to see Papa in action at work today! He was down at Meadowdale Park with his co-workers Bret and Nick doing some electrofishing sampling. Here the wiki def in case you wanted to know:
"Electrofishing uses electricity to stun fish before they are caught. Electrofishing is a common scientific survey method used to sample fish populations to determine abundance, density, and species composition. When performed correctly, electrofishing results in no permanent harm to fish..."
It was pretty fun to watch the guys in action doing something we've heard so much about here at home.
Please note that rad ghost busters sticker on the side of the electroshocker backpack! So, after doing part of the stream they stopped, measured and counted the little guys they collected.
The kids and I enjoyed getting a closer look.
There were coho, chum, cutthroat trout, and various sculpin. A whole slew of coho and chum had just been released days before from a local school, so their data was a little skewed.
Then they went back up a few hundred more feet:
More fish shocking fun!
Thea and Sai came down to watch a bit too, since we were in their neck of the woods (they walked!) so we got to see new walker Sai showing off! Somehow, I don't have photo evidence though, oh well.
It was fun to see Papa and the guys in action, and I'm looking forward to more of this sort of field trip in the months to come as preschool winds down for the year.
She's so proud to be up on the shoulders of her hardworking Papa!
